College of Law and Management Studies Hosts Successful Open Days
The College of Law and Management Studies’ Open Days on the Pietermaritzburg and Westville campuses attracted a large number of high school pupils and their parents who showed great interest in what the College offers.
The annual information event provides an opportunity for academics and staff to engage with prospective students, their parents and school teachers about various careers, entrance requirements and scholarship opportunities at the College.
School of Law academics, Mr Khulekani Zondi and Mr Vishal Surbun, spoke on the possibilities open to the youngsters if they chose a career in Law and how being part of community engagement initiatives such as the Law Clinic and the Street Law Programme could enhance their legal skills through dealing with real cases while serving the community at the same time.
Mr Nigel Chiweshe and Mr Taahir Vajeth of the School of Management, Information and Governance highlighted the importance of correct school subject choices to assist in acceptance for management studies. They advised the young folk to plan ahead and seek career guidance to ensure they met the necessary admission criteria.
School of Accounting, Economics and Finance academic, Mr Viresh Bhogal, spoke about the various academic programmes offered within the School and its reputation of producing high quality graduates and chartered accountants through its partnership with the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA).
There was also a video presentation on a student’s perspective of studying at UKZN while College staff were available to offer career guidance and answer questions and supply marketing material to ensure everyone was well informed.
Ms Cherly Govender, whose daughter Cordelle and a friend Merle Pillay are currently in Grade 12 at Greenbury Secondary School in Phoenix, said the Open Day had been very helpful and informative.
‘As parents we are often in the dark about the career options available and as a result we end up pressuring our children to choose a career they don’t like and don’t excel in. Events such as this make us aware of all that is on offer.’
Mihle Mdutyana, a pupil at Wentworth Secondary School, said the Open Day had helped her set her mind on following a career in Accounting.
